Datacasting

Datacasting refers to the use of broadcasting data using radio waves (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datacasting). Public television digital broadcast systems have available bandwidth to broadcast encrypted public safety information at very high speeds. In our effort to expand the coverage of digital data in the field, we partnered with New Hampshire Public Television to explore the possibility of using digital TV to transmit data to cruisers. The new technologies are being investigated through field deployments in New Hampshire State Police cruisers. The hope is that these new technologies will allow encrypted digital information (e.g., text, video) from Federal, state or local governments to be sent to police cruisers via New Hampshire Public Television broadcast transmitter sites. Downloaded information could then be used for emergency management, incident command, public safety, and interagency coordination.
